The bounce of the rugby ball was not in the favour of Potchefstroom Boys High’s first rugby team that suffered a 38-12 loss at the hands of Sasolburg High on their home turf in Potchefstroom.

Both schools played enterprising running rugby from the start, with both schools cheering on their teams from the stands. It was the Potch Boys who were the loudest early on when their team scored first on home turf.

Slick hands and running from the outside centre, Kago Moleme set up an easy finish for the right wing, Tshireletso Mosiane in the corner. The speedy wing with the pink scrum cap scored with an Olympic-quality dive to put his team 5-0 ahead. Sechaba Nakana slotted the conversion to add the two extra points.

Sasolburg High was undeterred and struck back quickly with their right wing, Lebo Leotlela dotting down to level the scores. The visitors took the lead a few minutes later when a bustling run from Hean Prinsloo set up Chris Kerslake who crashed over the try line. Sasol’s impressive flyhalf, Jacques van den Berg slotted the conversion.

Boys High got the break they needed before half-time when loose-head prop, Kabelo Phalatse went over for their second try. Nakana’s conversion hit the post, though, and it was 14-12 in Sasol’s favour at half-time.

The second half was a different story as Sasol dominated the possession and the scoreline. They ran in four unanswered tries from Van den Berg, Neo Mahonko, Marcelle Els and Siphe Mkhabela. Boys High had chances but could not take advantage of them. To add salt to their wounds, three of Sasol’s tries were scored from turnovers in their own 22.
