It was always going to be a bridge too far for Jomo Cosmos who battled their way to a 4-2 home loss at the hands of SuperSport United on Saturday, 27 February at Olën Park. Even at the interval, Cosmos was on the back foot and staring at the writing on the wall as the opposition were 1-0 up, thanks to a goal from Jeremy Brockie.
What I saw was a divided effort from Cosmos players. One would assume they were just not up for the game. The back four was altered but I am not sure that played to SuperSport’s advantage as Jeremy Brockie got a quickfire hat- trick to put the game to bed in the second half. Cosmos was offering little in terms of clawing its way back into the contest but a triple substitution from Jomo Sono changed the course of the game with Denver Mukamba and Micium Mhone bringing Ezenkosi to a mini fight back. It is said a stumble may prevent a fall, and it is not all doom and gloom for Jomo Sono’s men. They still have a welcome distraction in the form of Amazulu, which they meet in a cup tie at home on 8 March.
On the positive side, former club captain, Thabang Monare was brought back into the team and that will aid the balance of the team in the fight against the drop.
Cosmos’ next league match will be against the University of Pretoria on Saturday 12 March in a big away match that will be a definite decider in the relegation battle this season.
