The first ever interschool mini cricket tournament of its kind was held at Potchefstroom Primary last month thanks largely to the brainchild of Zaid Mahomed, a cricket coach at the school. “I wanted the youngsters to start playing cricket and it has a great developmental aspect. I then decided to host this tournament to introduce them to cricket in a fun way. Parents can then also see the difference that cricket can make in their child’s life,” said Mahomed.

Eight teams competed in the tournament which comprised of Grade 2 and 3 learners at the school. The teams chose their own names for the tournament that included the likes of the Dragons, Tigers, Leopards, Springboks, Sharks, Eagles, Lions and the Cheetahs.

A total of 64 boys took part in this particular tournament, each receiving a certificate. The Cheetahs were the eventual winners and smiled all the way as they received certificates and a floating trophy for the talents and hard work on the field. The winning team also participated in the Mini Cricket Festival that was held at HTS Potchefstroom on Saturday 24 October, which was a great learning curve for the youngsters.

“Disciplined boys play cricket. We are all proud of you who participated in the tournament,” added Mr. Willie de Villiers, principal of Potchefstroom Primary.

“A big thanks you to Mr. Ridwaan Hassim from NB Kitchen Kingdom and Marie Barnard who sponsored the event. Credit must also be given to the principal and the school staff who made this tournament a success,” emphasised Mahomed.
