The game ended 0-0, but the crowd was behind their teams until the very end. First class football in Potchefstroom is scarce, so it’s no surprise that Potchefstroomers came out in their numbers to support their newly-adopted Cosmos. Cosmos played their first home match at Olën Park on Sunday, 22 August. This match of two halves ended in a goalless draw, but the teams did not disappoint. In the first half, Golden Arrows had most of the possession leading to two early chances. The first came from Nkanyiso Cele. Cosmos keeper, Sherwyn Naicker made a great save.

This first save set the tone for the rest of Naicker’s day. The former u.20 South African national player had a great day between the sticks.

The next shot by Arrows’ Mabhuti Khenyeza in the 28th, veered out to the left hitting the side net.

Close to half time, the crowd favourite, Pentjie Zulu found himself alone in the box but missed the shot. In the second half, we saw a different Cosmos team, keeping possession of the ball and creating more chances. Zulu again wasted a chance for the home side – missing a volley in the box.

Brice, Aka “The Animal”, was substituted by Nkanyiso “The Public Protector” Madonsela in the 62nd minute. He pushed forward well, hitting a shot from range, but Arrows keeper, Philani Zikalala was well-positioned to collect the ball.

Both teams had a good outing on the day, creating chances. It was also a very good welcome for Cosmos to the city of expertise.

For me, the man of the match has to be Sherwyn Naicker, the cracker from Chatsworth, as he was well positioned throughout the game, keeping the Arrows’ attacks from hitting the back of the net.
