“I am very excited about our participation in this year’s Comrades Marathon. So much so, that I have decided to personally travel to KZN and support our 42 runners,” senior manager, Property High-Density, Elford Mayixale told the Herald this week.

Supporting Mayixale’ s optimism was Sydney Sizwe Mdluli, Sibanye Gold head Corporate and Cooke Sport who said, “Judging by the mining giant’s meteoric rise in overall sporting prowess over the last 18 months, who could blame us for continuing to exceed all expectations in all sporting activities we participate in?

Sibanye did admirably well at last year’s Comrades, amassing a total of 18 medals with multiple recipients in the Silver, Bronze, Bill Rowan and Vic Clapham categories. Spearheading the Sibanye Gold Campaign at Comrades this year will be the experience of last year’s silver medallist, Gold Reef 100 Miles champion and record holder, Velaphi Mapefane who will be looking to improve on his impressive time of just over 6 hours and 40 minutes.

Another contestant to watch is the evergreen James “Nsimbi” Nkosi who will be running his legendary 26th Comrades, hoping to improve on his 8 hours and 10 minute run last year that earned him a Bill Rowan Medal. He completed all his previous races.
