Operation Shanela nabs hundreds in province

In a significant crackdown on crime, North West police arrested 793 suspects during the week-long Operation Shanela.

In a sweeping crackdown on crime, North West police apprehended 793 suspects during Operation Shanela, which spanned from Monday, 15 July to Sunday, 21 July 2024. This extensive operation targeted various criminal activities across the province.

The arrested suspects face charges for serious crimes, including rape, murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), malicious damage to property, residential and business burglary, theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles, and theft from motor vehicles. Among those apprehended, 54 individuals were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Additionally, 347 of the suspects were wanted for contact crimes such as murder, attempted murder, rape, GBH assault, common assault, house robbery, and business robbery. Furthermore, 29 undocumented individuals were taken in for processing.

The operation involved a series of coordinated actions, including stop-and-search procedures, roadblocks, vehicle checkpoints, inspections of 56 licensed liquor premises, and visits to 13 second-hand goods dealers. Police also focused on tracing wanted suspects, leading to the confiscation of various illicit items. These included a range of drugs, dangerous weapons, four handguns with ammunition, three vehicles, liquor, tobacco products, and 11 kilograms of copper cables.

Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, the Provincial Police Commissioner, praised the police force for their dedication and success in apprehending the suspects. “The tireless efforts of our members in keeping criminals off the streets are commendable,” he said. “Their hard work ensures the safety and security of our communities.”
