Intensified VMMC campaign in Dr Kenneth Kaunda District targets school holidays

The Dr Kenneth Kaunda District in North West Province is ramping up Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) services ahead of the school holidays.

The North West Department of Health in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District is gearing up to enhance Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) services during the upcoming school holidays. With schools closing for the winter break, health officials anticipate a surge in demand for these services and have devised a comprehensive plan to meet the needs of the community.

Dr Lesley Mahole, the Family Physician for the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District, emphasized the district’s proactive approach during recent oversight visits to healthcare facilities. “We have identified key areas where we need to increase capacity to ensure that all clients seeking VMMC services are attended to,” Dr Mahole stated. The plan includes assembling dedicated teams of physicians across the district’s sub-districts to manage the anticipated influx effectively.

In addition to these specific dates, healthcare facilities throughout the district are open daily to accommodate appointments and to provide information to parents interested in the service for their children.

Dr Mahole also addressed the importance of health screenings for initiates in traditional initiation schools, highlighting the department’s commitment to the well-being of all individuals involved. “Screening initiatives aim to detect and manage pre-existing health conditions, ensuring a safer initiation process,” Dr Mahole affirmed, emphasizing the department’s respect for traditional practices while prioritizing health outcomes.

The initiative underscores the district’s broader commitment to men’s health and proactive healthcare management, particularly during peak periods such as school holidays. For further information and appointments, interested parties are encouraged to contact the district health office at Tel: (018) 462 5744 or email VMooki@nwpg.gov.za.

Collaborating closely with Right To Care, a non-governmental organization specializing in healthcare services, the district aims to maximize coverage and accessibility. Scheduled VMMC sessions have been organized as follows:

  • Matlosana Sub District – Tshepong Hospital – July 2, 2024
  • JB Marks Sub District – JB Marks CHC – July 3, 2024
  • Maquassi Hills Sub District – Bophelo Clinic – July 4, 2024
