A recent surge in law enforcement activity under Operation Shanela has led to the arrest of 1,328 suspects across the province, marking a significant stride in the ongoing effort to enhance community safety. The operation, which ran from Monday, 9 September to Sunday, 15 September 2024, targeted a range of criminal activities and demonstrated the effectiveness of high-density policing strategies.

The focus of the operation was multifaceted, addressing both violent crimes and regulatory infractions. Assaults, including those with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), emerged as a major concern with 205 individuals apprehended for such offenses. A substantial number of arrests—582 in total—were made during targeted raids by detective teams.

Throughout the week-long initiative, law enforcement agents conducted extensive searches, covering 2,081 individuals, 1,009 vehicles, and 172 premises. The operations also led to the closure of 29 unlicensed liquor establishments and inspections of 29 second-hand goods dealers, emphasizing a crackdown on illegal trade and safety violations.

The successful operation yielded significant seizures, including 37 rounds of ammunition, six firearms, 475 packets of cigarettes, seven dangerous weapons, various liquor products, and an assortment of illegal drugs. These confiscations underscore the operation’s success in disrupting criminal supply chains and addressing illicit activities.

Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Sello Kwena praised the efforts of all participants, noting, “The diligence and commitment demonstrated throughout Operation Shanela have been remarkable. Provincial management will continue to allocate resources strategically to foster safer communities across the region.”

Operation Shanela is part of a broader strategy to combat crime and enhance public safety, with continued emphasis on collaborative efforts and proactive enforcement. The recent results reflect the ongoing commitment of local law enforcement agencies to maintaining order and protecting residents from crime.
