Balloon boom shows solidarity with Palestine at Potch soccer room

Potchefstroom's skies did gleam, with balloons of hope as part of the 'Kick it for Palestine' dream. Hosted by Islamic Relief, the soccer scene raised funds with cheer, showing solidarity and bringing aid near.

On Sunday, 1 September 2024, the skies over Potchefstroom were filled with colourful balloons, each symbolizing hope and solidarity with the people of Palestine. The poignant balloon release marked the culmination of the third annual “Kick it for Palestine” soccer tournament, a community-driven initiative aimed at raising funds for the urgent humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Hosted by Islamic Relief South Africa, the event took place at Technical High School and saw an impressive turnout with 24 senior soccer teams, including participants from Newcastle and Ficksburg. The tournament, which was won by Amajuba Leeds from Newcastle, was more than just a sports competition; it was a vital effort to provide relief for those suffering in Palestine.

The balloon ceremony, held as a central part of the event, served as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle faced by Palestinians. With over 5% of Gaza’s population killed since October 7, 2023, and a humanitarian crisis that has persisted since 1947, the ceremony provided a moment of reflection and solidarity.

Islamic Relief South Africa has been at the forefront of aid efforts in Palestine, investing over £19.5 million in the past 11 months alone. Their work includes distributing food, providing nutritional and psychological support, and offering essential hygiene kits. The crisis for women and girls in Gaza is particularly dire, with many pregnant women enduring childbirth under extreme conditions due to a severe lack of medical resources. The organization has distributed approximately 60,000 hygiene and dignity kits to address critical shortages of sanitary products.

The soccer tournament was made possible by the support of local businesses and individuals from Potchefstroom, Klerksdorp, and beyond. Their sponsorship ensured that all funds raised during the event would go directly to Islamic Relief’s Palestine Emergency Appeal. Local volunteers, including a group of ladies from Klerksdorp managing the tuckshop and the PMWF selling drinks, played a crucial role in the event’s success.

Islamic Relief South Africa, part of a global network founded in the UK in 1984, has been dedicated to providing emergency aid and fostering sustainable development in over 40 countries. In South Africa, the organization has been registered as a non-profit since 2004 and continues to support vulnerable communities both locally and abroad.
