NWU Symphony Orchestra captivates a evening of Russian and romance

The Symphony Orchestra’s concert, “A Russian Romance,” enchanted a nearly full house at the Sanlam Auditorium on 17 August 2024. The evening featured a program of Russian classics that left a profound impact on the audience, blending powerful performances with exceptional talent.

The concert opened with the lively “Russian Sailors Dance,” setting a vibrant tone for the night. The highlight of the evening was Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 Op. 18, performed by the gifted pianist Samir Dooki from Kwazulu Natal. Dooki’s performance drew a standing ovation from the audience, underscoring his impressive virtuosity and emotional expression.

Jaco van der Walt, Head of NWU Arts, noted the evening’s warm and inviting atmosphere, filled with anticipation. He commented on the palpable excitement that enveloped the auditorium throughout the performance.

The program also included Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 1 in G minor Op. 13, which brought the concert to a stirring close. The orchestra’s rendition of Tchaikovsky’s symphony captivated listeners, leaving them enthralled until the final note.

Annemarie Hoffman, Chairperson of the NWU Symphony Orchestra, shared her reflections on the night. “It was a special concert—the heart-touching music made me feel like I just wanted to close my eyes and float away with the beautiful melodies. It’s extra special to know you were part of the arrangements to make the evening possible.”

As Tchaikovsky’s Symphony concluded, the audience responded with enthusiastic applause, celebrating the orchestra’s dedication and artistry. The concert was a memorable evening, showcasing the power of live orchestral music and its ability to evoke deep emotional responses.
