Local martial arts club shines at Gauteng championship

The North West Black Belt Academy, a Potchefstroom-based Korean Martial Arts Club, has made waves at the 2024 Gauteng Korean Martial Arts Championship.

The North West Black Belt Academy, a local Korean Martial Arts Club based in Potchefstroom, has emerged with flying colors from the 2024 Gauteng Korean Martial Arts Championship held in Pretoria on 4 May 2024. The event showcased the skills and dedication of the club’s members, with notable performances from several athletes.

Leading the charge was Instructor Louise Viviers, who expressed her pride in the team’s achievements. “We are thrilled with the results. Our students have worked incredibly hard, and their success is a testament to their dedication and the spirit of martial arts,” she said.

The club’s standout performers included Bakang Pule, who secured one gold and one silver medal, and Zade Hofsta, who clinched one gold, one silver, and one bronze. Ethan Malloy contributed to the club’s tally with one gold and one bronze, while Abigail Le Roux displayed her prowess with one gold and three silver medals.

Although absent from the photo, Tshwanelo Mathekga’s achievements were also highlighted, with two gold, one silver, and one bronze medal. Janco Rabe, another member of the team, was also recognized for his participation.

Master Louise Viviers emphasized the self-funded nature of the club, stating, “We do not secure sponsors. Each athlete is responsible for the cost of their participation in tournaments.” She also shared details about the club’s membership process, including the 2024 registration fees starting from R460 per month per person, which includes various fees such as training, registration, graduation, and affiliation.

The club offers discounted fees for families with two or more students, as well as two free introductory lessons. It caters to both kids aged 5 to 11 and teens and adults from 12 years and above, with no experience required.

The North West Black Belt Academy has a long history in Potchefstroom and Klerksdorp, dating back to 1993 and 1997, respectively. After facing the challenges posed by the Covid pandemic, the club is currently in the process of rebuilding and invites new members to join.

The North West Black Belt Academy’s success at the Gauteng Championship is a clear indication of the club’s commitment to excellence in Korean Martial Arts, and its members look forward to further achievements in the coming year.
