Double delight for Saints Christian School at SACSSA championships

Saints Christian School’s U/19 girls’ soccer teams achieved remarkable success at the 2024 SACSSA championships, with both the A and B teams securing gold and silver medals respectively.

It was a golden day for Saints Christian School’s U/19 girls’ soccer teams at the 2024 SACSSA (Southern African Christian Schools Sport Association) senior girls soccer championships, as both their A and B teams bagged gold and silver medals respectively. This incredible achievement underscores the school’s dominance in girls’ soccer.

The Saints U/19 girls’ team, comprised of 18 top-notch footballers, was split into two squads for this national six-a-side tournament. Facing off against teams from 12 major private schools, both Saints teams showcased their skills by reaching the final.

In a thrilling conclusion, Saints A edged out Saints B with a 2-1 win on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regular time. It was a nail-biting finish that left spectators on the edge of their seats and highlighted the immense talent within the Saints squads.

The semi-finals were a testament to the strength of the Saints teams. Saints A triumphed over Covenant with a commanding 3-0 victory, while Saints B secured their spot in the final by defeating Westrand 1-0. Among the standout performers was 11-year-old Leanny Makusha, who displayed nerves of steel by saving crucial penalties in the final.

What sets this Saints squad apart is its blend of age groups, proving that if you’re good enough, you’re old enough. Superb leadership played a pivotal role in their success, with Tshegofatso Monyela and Reatile Matlhare captaining the A-team, and Shiloh Vorster leading the young B-side.

“We are absolutely over the moon. The coaches and I are so proud. To be the two best teams at a national tournament is truly incredible and special,” said Ché Williams, head coach of the Saints U/19 girls’ soccer team.

Dikeledi Monama, who coached the B-team, praised her captain Shiloh Vorster’s leadership. “Shiloh led every single girl, on and off the field, like a champion. She showed tremendous leadership skills and a passion for her team and the game,” added Monama.

The B-team’s journey to the final was marked by standout performances from defenders Tshiamo Skunka and Siphokazi Duma, who were rock-solid in the semi-final. In the final, Lindelwa Makhapela’s beautiful goal put the B-side ahead 1-0, but the A-team quickly equalized, leading to an intense penalty shootout.

“I am so proud of each player. The girls were determined to prove their worth and showed a willingness to win at all costs,” Monama said proudly.

Williams noted the effort invested by the coaching staff over the years to elevate the squad’s performance. “The A-team dominated in every area. Our organization, tactics, and technical ability are on another level. This win motivates us to excel in the upcoming senior 11-a-side tournaments and also inspires our junior players for their SACSSA tournament on 1 June.”

With this double triumph, Saints Christian School has cemented its status as a powerhouse in girls’ soccer, promising even more thrilling performances in the future.
