Traffic officer arrested for corruption in undercover sting

Tumelo Jeffrey Tau was caught in an undercover operation demanding bribes to release an impounded truck. He has been granted bail and will appear in court again on 1 July 2024.

In a decisive move against corruption, the North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, has praised the Anti-Corruption Investigation Unit (ACIU) for their successful operation leading to the arrest of Tumelo Jeffrey Tau, a 39-year-old Traffic Officer within the JB Marks local Municipality.

Tau was apprehended on Thursday, 23 May 2024, during a meticulously planned undercover operation. Reports indicate that Tau had stopped a truck driver, alleging that the driver had outstanding traffic fines. Tau then impounded the truck and demanded a payment for its release.

Upon receiving a tip-off about Tau’s activities, the Anti-Corruption members swiftly organized an undercover sting operation. Tau was caught red-handed accepting the money, leading to his immediate arrest.

Following his arrest, Tau appeared before the Potchefstroom Magistrates’ Court today, where he was granted bail set at R1000.00. His next court appearance is scheduled for Monday, 1 July 2024.

Lieutenant General Sello Kwena commended the ACIU for their dedication and effective action in tackling corruption within the traffic department. He emphasized that such actions undermine public trust and that the police force will continue to rigorously pursue justice against corrupt practices.

The arrest of Tumelo Jeffrey Tau serves as a stern reminder of the commitment of law enforcement agencies in North West Province to uphold integrity and accountability within public services. The community is urged to report any suspicious activities to help maintain a corruption-free environment.
