A female student was allegedly sexually assaulted at student accommodation in Dwars Street.

The incident reportedly happened around noon on 26 October.

After the incident, the student went to the Potchefstroom police station to report it while intoxicated. An argument occurred between the victim and police officers on duty, after which they asked the victim to leave and allegedly told her they would not open a sexual assault case.

On exiting the police station, Community in Blue members allegedly hit the victim with sjamboks.

Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Funani confirmed that the SAPS had opened a docket for the alleged sexual assault and assigned a detective to the case. She added that the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) was investigating the alleged assault by Community in Blue
members.

Colonel Adele Myburgh confirmed this and stated that IPID was investigating the case as police officers were allegedly involved.

Colonel Myburgh said the 22-year-old student opened a case of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm on 30 October.

The victim opened another case of sexual assault. Myburgh says the accused will be in court on 8 December for his third appearance.

The victim did not want to comment on the incident but confirmed the details.
