After collecting illegal weapons from criminals throughout Ikageng for over six months, the Peri Peri community safety group handed over a large number of these weapons to the Potchefstroom SAPS on Thursday, 15 September.

The collection of these weapons was followed by an outcry from the community about criminals that are terrorising them and robbing them of cash and cell phones in the streets and breaking into their houses. During the patrols by the Peri Peri, dangerous weapons like pangas, knives and guns were seized and officially handed over to the sector commander, Sergeant Nkagi Kgagodi, for safekeeping and destruction. Kgagodi congratulated the Peri Peri on a job well done and applauded them for their commitment, bravery and selflessness in ensuring that Ikageng residents are safe. He further confirmed that they will be working hand in hand with Peri Peri to ensure that illegal weapons are taken off the streets.

The President of the organisation, Lucky Lerefolo, emphasised the importance of keeping the Ikageng community safe. “ We are prepared to go to prison for the safety of our community,” he said. A community member Joyce Phetwesaid it is every parent’s duty to teach their children right from wrong. “We need to stop accepting stolen items and money that our children bring into our homes due to poverty,” she said. “Let us do better as parents and contribute to a better society,” she concluded.
