For many RDP homeowners, Saturday (23 October) was a joyous day when they received their long-awaited title deeds at the OR Tambo Community Hall in Ikageng.

J.B. Marks Municipality’s executive mayor, Mapule Mataboge, presented 310 title deeds at the event.

According to Errol Temanie, the chief of staff in the mayor’s office, they planned to hand over 409 title deeds, but not all the owners were present. “When two owners appeared on the title deeds, both owners had to be present,” said Temanie.

He says people who didn’t receive their title deeds should go to the municipality’s main building on the second floor and present their IDs.

The Herald spoke to some homeowners who were happy that they had finally got their lawful documents. One said she had been waiting to receive her title deeds for 20 years.  “My child was 11 years old when we moved into the house, and he is now 31.” Another man, Godfrey Molefe (50), said his house was built six years ago.  He considers himself lucky not to have waited so long.

All the RDP houses have basic services like sewerage, water, and electricity.
