The international singer, Amira Willighagen, and five learners at Tshupane primary in Ikageng became famous in Belgium when a photo of them was printed on postal stamps.

This stamp recently won a prize as one of the top ten most popular stamps in Belgium and earned prize money of R2,500. It is not unusual to make your own personalised stamps in Belgium and the Netherlands.

The most popular stamps are awarded prize money annually. The stamp photo with Amira and the learners was taken in 2019 when Amira introduced Tshupane Primary School’s new playground.

Amira is the founder of Stichting Gelukskinders (Lucky Children’s Foundation), a foundation that raises funds to build playgrounds at schools. The funds are used to build and install play equipment like swings, slides, and climbing bars and for its maintenance. On 5 March 2014, Amira opened the first playground in Ikageng. She co-financed it from half of the revenue she made with her first international performances.

Amira recently handed over the prize money to the five learners on the photo, which enabled them to buy brand new school uniforms. The foundation is currently planning to build more playgrounds at local schools. In November, they are going to install a playground at the pre-school, Hope of Glory, in Ikageng and three primary schools – Bokamosa (Reismierbult), Opang Diatla (Ventersdorp), and Keotshipile (Ikageng). Amira Willighagen (17) was born in the Netherlands and won the sixth season of Holland’s Got Talent in 2013, at the age of nine. She discovered her talent and passion for music and singing using YouTube tutorials. She lives in Potchefstroom and is a learner at Hoër Volkskool.
