On Sunday, 14 March, the Morey family took a trip from Pretoria to the Potchefstroom graveyard to visit their father, Mike Morey and their grandmother Hattie Horsburgh. They were both buried in the 90s and had lived in Potchefstroom for over 30 years.
To the family’s horror, they found the cemetery in an unbelievable state.
“We were horrified when we went there; the graveyard looks terrible,” exclaimed Peter.
Peter, his mother, Berry and his brother, Mark, couldn’t believe what they saw.
The family usually prays and lays flowers on the grave when they visit the cemetery, but this time they felt unsafe. The once beautiful graveyard looked like an open veld.
“My mom had written a prayer and we were nervous the entire time we were there; we thought we were in danger. I have never seen the graveyard look as terrible as it currently does,” Peter said. “It’s absolutely disgusting.”
Peter and his family were last at the cemetery three years ago. He remembers it being a lovely place where one could sit quietly and spend time with their departed loved ones. The Herald asked the municipality for comment but by the time of going to print none was received.
