Mother accused of murdering newborn abandons bail

Wendy Tapiwa Kamwot abandoned her bail application.  She is expected to remain in custody  and will appear again in the same court on Friday,  14 May 2021.

On Friday, March 19, 2021, a 29-year-old woman is appeared in the Brits Magistrates’ Court in connection with the suspected murder of her newborn baby.

According to police, the suspect allegedly gave birth to a newborn baby on Friday, March 12, 2021, at her home in Sunway, Rietfontein, Hartbeesportdam. The alleged perpetrator is said to have placed the newborn baby in boiling water, then wrapped the baby in plastic and buried the newborn in a shallow grave at a nearby field.

She later confided in her friend about the incident, who then alerted the police. Police have found the body of the baby, buried in a shallow grave.

The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, applauded the suspect’s friend for speaking out and working with the police in ensuring that the suspect was arrested for this horrendous crime.  Furthermore he said community members must keep on cooperating with the police in order to ensure the protection of the most vulnerable in society.
