Pigs roam freely in Tshing

Residents of Tshing in Ventersdorp feel uneasy when animals roam freely in their streets.

Mvulene Voyi, a concerned resident from Mosikidi Street, speaks on the issue of animals, particularly pigs, walking around their residential area daily.

He says this has been a problem for more than two months.

Voyi says he is usually woken up by the loud oink of pigs nearby or in his yard in the mornings.

According to him, people release the animals to roam freely in the streets every morning and they eventually get into people’s yards. This is a huge frustration for him and he has even given up on maintaining his lawn as they have trampled and damaged his garden.

Voyi says people are afraid to walk in the streets as they fear getting infected with illnesses like swine flu.

He is mostly concerned about the children coming back from school and families coming home for the holidays. He worries that the pigs may make them feel restricted this festive season.

Herman van der Sluis, the operating manager of Paws (Potchefstroom Animal Welfare Society), says they weren’t aware of the above problem in the area. However, they appeal to the concerned residents to send an email to manager@potch.paws.co.za with their name, contact details and address. Alternatively, they can call 018 294 3856 or 071 681 9264.

The Herald requested comment from the municipality but had not had a reply by the time of going to print.
