Demarcation of wards almost complete

The Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) has concluded the final electoral wards for Batch 1 Municipalities (Annexure A), in line with schedule 1 of the Municipal Structures Act. 

The Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) has concluded the final electoral wards for Batch 1 Municipalities (Annexure A), in line with schedule 1 of the Municipal Structures Act. According to a statement, the final wards for Batch 1 Municipalities will be released in provincial gazettes from Thursday, 01 October – Wednesday, 07 October. These wards, from 109 municipalities, will be handed over to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

Following the consideration of inputs of the communities, the MCB has delimited wards for all Batch 2 Municipalities. These are wards from 104 Municipalities. Consequently, wards for Batch 2 Municipalities will also be released in provincial gazettes from 01 October – 07 October.

If a person may be aggrieved with the finalisations, within 14 days of publication of the Provincial Gazettes, one can submit written objections to the Board.

Objections should be aligned to the criteria used for, ward delimitation and should include proposals on how wards should be arranged. According to the statement, the chairperson of the MDB, Thabo Manyoni was pleased with the progress made following the finalisation of electoral wards for Batch 1 municipalities. “Final wards (Batch 2 municipalities) as agreed between the parties, will be handed over to the IEC in November 2020”, said Manyoni. He reassured the public that there will be no delays in finalising the electoral ward process.
