Thanks to the Potchefstroom Chamber of Commerce (PCC), Clean-up together J.B. Marks Forum, and the J.B. Marks municipality who decided to drive the National Clean-up and Recycle SA week in Potchefstroom, the town will be spick and span for the summer.

They have inspired and invited businesses, organisations, families, and the entire community to clean up in the areas where they work, live, and play from 14 to 19 September. Residents are asked to collect the litter and ensure that it is recycled. “We are passionate about Potchefstroom and believe that our community can make a huge difference by standing together and creating a more aesthetically-pleasing city. Everybody is welcome to volunteer to clean up in a specific area. All the litter items that will be collected will be recycled,” said Charmaine Smit, the PCC project leader of the clean-up.

The PCC was handing out free garbage bags at listed focus areas daily and aimed to pick up 5000 bags of litter by the end of the week.

Each day of the week there were focus areas that received tender loving care. On Monday (14 September), all entry routes to Potchefstroom were cleaned. These areas included most of Nelson Mandela Drive, Ross Street, Parys Avenue, and Louis le Grange Street. The volunteers tackled Govan Mbeki Avenue, the Wasgoedspruit next to Chief Albert Luthuli Drive and Van der Hoff Park on Tuesday (15 September). Potch Central and Mieder Park were done and dusted on Wednesday (16 September).

On Thursday, (17 September), people in Potch Industria and Ikageng were invited to get their hands dirty and on Friday (18 September), the area from the Parys Avenue robot towards Govan Mbeki Avenue were cleaned. The week of clean-up ended on Saturday when the Trim Park and Govan Mbeki Avenue were cleaned. “It is never too late to join the big clean-up and make a difference. It doesn’t have to be only during the National Clean-Up Week” says Charmaine who invites all business and the public to call her on 064 635 8759 to get involved.
