NWU continues to achieve high pass rates despite Covid-19

With hard work, creativity, and perseverance, the North-West University (NWU) continue to achieve academic success despite (Covid-19).

They endured the devastation by the pandemic and managed to obtain even higher pass rates in the first semester of 2020 compared to 2019. 

Louis Jacobs, NWU spokesperson said that their teaching-learning support units and facilities have worked together to ensure the student’s academic achievement. Also, that the institution is committed to continuously improve the quality teaching-learning support to ensure the good results are produced in the first semester, following the foundation laid in 2019.

For the first semester, the university’s pass rate and active registration are higher this year than it was in 2019. Students who have passed modules, in connection with the number of students enrolled, is 88 %. This is higher than in 2019 when it was 85,9%. 

Between 2019 and 2020, there is a significant decrease in the attrition rate across all the faculties. According to Louis, in this case, the attrition rate refers to the difference in the number of students who registered for a module and those who actively participated. “The 2020 attrition rate is 0,49%, which is significantly lower than the 3,30% in 2019 and 3,49% in 2018, “The university has successfully managed to keep the dropout rate – students who registered but did not graduate – low at 10,78% for its 2019 academic year,” stated Louis.

Professor Dan Kgwadi, the vice-chancellor of NWU noted that academic results may change at the end of the year, the results so far, suggests that the time and efforts that are invested by NWU academics to teach with passion and diligence, and the university’s capacity building and budget allocations towards effective professional teaching-learning student support initiatives are paying off.

“The staff of the NWU is continuously striving to provide the best possible student learning experience and to prepare students to be ready for challenges in any sector. “We are confident that we will be able to complete the academic year in January 2021, enabling us to be ready for the new academic year.” he said. He added that the university’s teaching-learning portfolio will continue to support and develop its students in their journeys towards achieving success.
