Parents whose children (newborn to six years) missed their immunisation because of the national Covid-19 lockdown period since 26 March are invited to join the Department of Health’s immunisation catch-up campaign.

The campaign takes place from 8:00 to 15:00 every Tuesday and Thursday during August and September at the old town hall in Walter Sisulu Avenue.

Those who are interested should book an appointment in advance by calling 083 652 8012 during office hours to prevent overcrowding and disappointment.

During July, the second-year B Cur nursing students at the NWU were honoured to have been part of the campaign. They had the opportunity to weigh, take the length/height, mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC), measured the head circumference and took the body temperature of every child and estimated their body mass index accordingly.

They immunised and caught up with different vaccines according to every child’s Road to Health book’s immunisation schedule and provided Vitamin A supplements and deworming medication where necessary. In some cases, they also offered family planning options to clients.

The personnel of the School of Nursing Science at the NWU thank Petro Swanepoel and the Department of Health for the great opportunity of being part of the project.
