Ikamava Youth has adopted WhatsApp Tutoring Sessions to provide its learners with academic support. As institutions have switched to online learning platforms to continue teaching, Ikamva Youth also continues to offer its tutoring services using the social media platform and provides study materials.

Ntombi Mahlangu, Ikamva Youth Ikageng branch coordinator, says they wish to keep the momentum of the stellar pass rate of their 2019 cohort by using technology to continue with tutoring sessions. “We are determined to keep Ikamvanites’ young minds stimulated and prepared for when schools reopen to ensure success in their academic careers,” she said.

To this end, all Ikamva Youth branches have adapted their tutoring programmes to continue providing academic support to its learners through the online platform during the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic.

WhatsApp groups have been created for learners in grades nine to 12, arranged by the subject streams.

The tutoring sessions are at scheduled times from Monday to Thursday.

Each group has at least two tutors who facilitate the learning programmes and each subject runs for a maximum of two hours. Learners can also post questions and the tutors respond by guiding and providing answers in real-time.

In the North West region, career guidance is still provided for the learners in the WhatsApp groups.

“The staff of our branch are managing the virtual tutoring space, ensuring effective learner and tutor participation as they do at the branches.

We have leveraged our relationships with parents, requesting them to avail their phones to their children during this period,” Mahlangu said.

She added that the organisation is committed to keeping learners engaged with their academics, and is responsive to the continued developments made in the national and Department of Basic Education plans during the lockdown period.

Ikamva also expresses its gratitude to Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa for its continued support.
