Sweet tooths and young at hearts are cordially invited to this Saturday’s (28 September) giant cake sale at the Mooirivier Mall when funds are raised for children with cancer. A 10-meter long table with 5000 freshly baked cupcakes will be on display from eight till late. The public is encouraged to buy cupcakes at R10 each.
Angelique Hall and Elmarieta van Niekerk are the organisers of this event and represent Cupcakes for Hope, a non-profit organisation, who raise funds for young cancer patients. It was started 10 years ago by Cindy Cipriano, a Vereeniging resident, who decided something must be done after her fiend’s three-year-old daughter died of cancer. “The first year we raised R5000 and helped one little boy. Now we have helped more than 1500 patients…This is the sweetest way to help save a life”, she said.
The last Saturday in September is now officially known as National Cupcake Day 4 Kids with Cancer and 88 shopping centres in South Africa will take part in the event. This year will mark the eighth year this fundraising event will take place on a national level.
