The police have arrested at least 10 people today on charges of public violence following violent service delivery protests that erupted in Ikageng.

According to Col. Adele Myburgh, provincial police spokesperson, more arrests are imminent and police are maintaining their presence in the area.

According to her the N12 between Potchefstroom and Klerksdorp was still closed.

“The road has been blocked since 05:00 this morning and closed for traffic. Motorists are requested to use the Mooibank road as an alternative route when traveling from Potchefstroom to Klerksdorp and vice versa,” Myburgh said.

She confirmed that police are investigating several criminal cases which emanated from the protests.

“A case of Malicious damage to property was opened after a Backhoe (construction vehicle)  was used to dig up tar roads in Ikageng, leading to Sarafina from the N12, Top City road towards Sarafina and the Mandela road leading to Sarafina. Today during the early hours of the morning a truck transporting goods was looted on the N12 and the case is also under investigation,” said Myburgh.

According to her police confirmed that two shops owned by foreign nationals were looted, although no cases have been opened yet.
