The youth in Kanana and Top City took to the streets by burning tyres and barricading roads in Kanana and Ikageng to protest about stands this morning (24 June).

According to Tebogo Ngomezulu, the spokesperson of the protesters, they started by illegally erecting shacks next to Top City clinic in the area called Freedom Town on Sunday.

“We desperately need stands. We cannot continue to stay in the back rooms of our mothers’ houses,” said Ngomezulu.

According to one of the staff members at the Top City clinic, the shacks were later demolished by a security company appointed by the J.B Marks municipality.

Ngomezulu says they will keep on protesting until the executive mayor, Kgotso Khumalo comes to meet with them.

“The executive mayor promised to meet with us today to address the stand allocation, however, he is nowhere to be found. We will keep on burning tyres until he agrees to meet with us,” said   Ngomezulu.

Victor Boqo, the mayoral spokesperson says the mayor did not agree to meet with the community today. “The mayor is out of town attending a meeting,” he said.
