The J.B. Marks municipality is embarking on a ten-day intensive cleaning campaign to address the enormous backlog in household waste and street littering in town, the suburbs and the townships.
According to the municipal spokesperson, Wille Maphosa, this programme will run from 5 November to 28 November. It will focus on the areas that their compactor loader has been unable to service so far.
‘The municipality has secured additional resources and support to attend to this critical need. This work will not adversely affect the current schedule but rather complement it.
‘We have divided the city into four distinct hotspots and we will target each one in this period,’ he said.
‘Between 5 and 16 November, the municipal workers will tackle the CBD, taxi rank and surrounding areas. From 19 to 30 November, the department will clean up the southern suburbs, the industrial area, Ikageng main entrance and surrounding areas. From 3 to 14 December, the cleaning campaign will focus on the northern suburbs, Bult, Cachet Park and surrounding areas.
The campaign will end with the eastern suburbs, shopping malls, Baillie Park and surrounding areas,’ says Maphosa.
The clean- up will concentrate on household refuse (black plastic bags, cardboard boxes, loose litter and all the solid waste a refuse compactor cannot remove). ‘It will exclude building rubble and garden refuse.
‘The municipality needs all members of the community to buy into the deal, be understanding and to cooperate. In so doing, we believe littering and illegal dumping will come to an end,’ he said.
