Baby burnt to death in shack fire, mother arrested

The 24-year-old mother of a 5-month-old baby has been arrested in connection with the death of her child after their shack burned down on Monday.

The Ikageng police are investigating a case of murder and arson.

According to Sgt Kelebogile Trom, the police spokesperson, the police attended an arson incident in Thusanang Street. “On their arrival, they met with the fire department official, who told them that they have already extinguished the fire and do not know the cause of the fire. The Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) personnel also found a baby, who they declared dead,” said Trom.

Trom further said that according to the police statement, the mother of the deceased told the police that she had had an argument with her boyfriend. When her boyfriend went to work, she also left, but when she came back she found the house burning and she couldn’t save her child as the blaze was too strong.”

“The boyfriend later alleged that the girlfriend had threatened to burn the house down. The landlord corroborated the boyfriend’s allegations. The mother was arrested,” reported Trom.
