Tuesday’s police statistics showed that Ikageng recorded 134 incidents of rape between April 2017 and March 2018. The figure has increased by 10 rape incidents in comparison to the 2016/2017 financial year. The total number of all sexual offences stands at 161.
This indicates that, on average, someone in Ikageng was raped every third day between April 2017 and March 2018.
In the current financial year, the rape incidents are still increasing with three rape cases reported last week alone. According to Sgt Kelebogile Trom, two unknown men took turns raping a 23-year-old woman in Ext. 7.
‘The woman walked to her sister’s house alone at about 01:00. She heard footsteps behind her and looked back to see two unknown males who had covered their faces with handkerchiefs. One of them told her not to scream or he would stab her. The other one started searching her for money. When she told them she didn’t have anything on her, they dragged her to a toilet at one of the houses nearby. They took turns raping her and then fled,’ reported Trom.
She says a 20-year-old woman suspects that her friend’s brother raped her in Promosa after she fell asleep at their home. ‘The woman alleges that she and her friend went to the latter’s house after drinking wine at one of the taverns in Ikageng. They both went to lie down and the woman fell asleep on the bed.
‘She woke up with someone on top of her. When the suspect realised that she was awake, he ran out. The victim says this was her first encounter with a man and she was in pain. She noticed that her friend’s brother was wearing the same shirt as the person who had raped her. She later reported the incident to her aunt,’ said Trom.
The third incident happened last Friday. According to Trom, the 27-year-old woman alleges that her 31-year-old boyfriend had raped and sodomised her in Ikageng at about 22:00.
