School of Artillery makes a greener difference in Potchefstroom

‘The goal of our project is to keep our unit green,’ said Lebatla.

The School of Artillery at the Klipdrift Military Base has many projects, especially with regard to reaching out to the community. Late last year, they launched their very own recycling project as well.

The idea originated from Capt. Mamba and Maj. Kedibone Lebatla bought into the idea and decided to coordinate and run the project.

‘The goal of our project is to keep our unit green,’ said Lebatla. She said this was a good way of keeping the unit clean, helping with the environment and generating revenue from it.

‘This is a great project because the money goes back to the army and, at the same time, we keep our unit clean. We don’t need to set up dumping areas because now we can recycle.’

Large cages are set out in different locations on the army grounds for plastic bottles, cardboard boxes, glass and tin cans respectively. The unit contracts the ASB (Army Support Base), which has its own recycling project, to collect the recyclable items when they are full.

Lebatla said the project is a work in progress and that everyone in the unit is gradually buying into the idea and working together to make the unit greener.

‘People are now starting to use the cages more regularly so it is working,’ she said.

Lebatla said she is not aware of any unit in the Potchefstroom area, besides the ASB, that is currently running a recycling project. She would like to motivate others to take up the project and help make the army greener.

‘We are so environmentally driven and we really want to see our units clean and green,’ she said.
