On Tuesday, 24 October, the same day that the police minister released the national crime statistics, a 35-year-old woman in Ikageng died after being stabbed multiple times by her boyfriend.
According to Sgt Kelebogile Trom, the police received a call at about 18:00 to say a woman had been stabbed in Mabopane Street.
‘When they arrived at the scene, the EMRS personnel had already certified the woman dead. She had multiple stab wounds to her body and was lying on the floor, covered with two duvets. There was blood all over.’
Earlier, the 9-year-old daughter of the deceased had run to tell the neighbour that her mother’s boyfriend had stabbed her and fled the scene. ‘The woman accompanied the girl to the house and found the victim still alive. As the victim was telling them what had happened, she gave her last breath,’ said Trom.
Trom says the accused later handed himself over to the police. According to crime stats for the last financial year, there have already been 31 murders in Ikageng. The figure has increased from the 27 murders in 2015/2016.
The North West province recorded 901 murders between April 2016 and March 2017. In the same period, 19 016 murders took place across the country, increasing by 343 from 18 673 murders in 2015/2016.
