Second supermarket robbery

Robbers broke into Choppies Superstore in the early hours of Wednesday morning and fled with hundreds of thousands from a safe and the Sassa ATM.

Robbers broke into Choppies Superstore in the early hours of Wednesday morning and fled with hundreds of thousands from a safe and the Sassa ATM.
Three weeks ago, Boxer Superstore was targeted and the suspects also made off with a large undisclosed amount of money.
According to Capt. Mvula Chaka, the Potchefstroom SAPS spokesperson, the robbers gained entry through the roof of Choppies while it was still dark. They removed the Sassa ATM in the store, took it to the back and removed hundreds of thousands of rands from the machine. Chaka says they then proceeded to bomb the safe and helped themselves to hundreds of thousands from there, too. The suspects exited from the back door.
Chaka says the manager of the store realised something was amiss when he opened the store at about 05:50.
‘The manager and the CS Security called the police to the scene of the crime and all the role players were in attendance,’ he said.
The police are still not sure how many robbers were involved. ‘No one has been arrested, the investigation continues,’ he said.
The SAPS spokesperson says they will be able to determine whether the incidents are linked once the investigations have been concluded.
