A passer-by discovered a fully-developed baby girl in the veld in Promosa on Tuesday afternoon.
According to one of the people at the scene, the little body, with the umbilical cord still attached, was in an orange plastic bag next to a pink, blood-stained nightdress. The police spokesperson, Const. Kelebogile Trom says a case of concealment of birth is being investigated. ‘A man was walking home from work when he discovered the little bundle. He immediately called the police. The baby was declared dead and handed to forensic services,’ she said.
Const. Trom urged any community members who may have information about the mother of the baby to please come forward and report it to the police.
On 6 August last year, the Herald carried the story of a premature baby in a plastic bag that had been dumped in desolate bushes on the corner of Montana and Manchester streets in Promosa. The placenta was found in a grey plastic bag.
Sharun Tromp, the director of Taletha Terri Care Centre in Potchefstroom says there is no need for this to happen in our communities. At that time, she said the centre was started to prevent cases like this. ‘We would like to urge every young girl who finds herself in a crisis pregnancy and desperate for help, to call us. We offer free support and counselling to get her through these crisis times,’ she said. She added that if anyone is faced with an unwanted pregnancy and wants to explore pro-life options, they should feel free to contact them at 079 7051825.
