NW government to boost schools in townships and villages

The recent Gr. 12 results have revealed that learners in town schools continue to fare better than their counterparts in township and village schools.

Similarly, in Ikageng, not one school achieved a 100 per cent pass rate compared to the town schools which, incidentally, also produced the top learner in the province -Luné Smit from Volkies.
The schools from Potchefstroom took the first five positions with BA Seobi from Ikageng coming sixth with a pass rate of 97.97 per cent.
Brian Setswambung, the spokesperson in the office of the premier says the NW provincial government will, through the Department of Education and Sport Development, redirect more education resources to schools in the province’s villages, townships and small dorpies (VTSD) in a bid to improve their overall performance and matric results.
The premier, Supra Mahumapelo, announced the intervention when he addressed hundreds of high school principals and chairpersons of school governing bodies at the Rustenburg Civic Centre on Friday, 20 January.
‘This will not only be consistent with the provincial government’s VTSD strategy and its efforts to fight the levels of poverty but will help to ensure that quality teaching and learning takes place at all schools in the province, with a special focus on VTSD schools,’ he said. He added that, while they are pleased with the performance of the province in the 2016 matric results, the fact that schools in urban areas continue to outperform those in rural areas remains a concern. ‘Radical action must, therefore, be taken to ensure that the contribution of VTSD schools in the province’s overall pass rate is pleasingly visible,’ he said.
In evaluating the schools’ contribution to the overall provincial percentage, Mahumapelo announced that, from this year onwards, the province will announce matric results per village, township and small dorpie.
‘The purpose of this meeting was for the premier to thank the schools’ principals, teachers, members of the SGBs and parents for the support they showed to the learners during 2016. It was also to encourage them to continue enforcing efficiency and discipline at all schools.
‘Premier Mahumapelo expressed his satisfaction with the readiness of the province on the first day of school. So far, 98 per cent of the schools across the province have recorded that 100 per cent of learner support material has been delivered,’ he said.
