Theft of refuse bins a serious concern

NW 405 municipality has noted with serious concern that there has been a rising number of complaints and reports of stolen refuse bins from both Ikageng and many parts of the city.
The council spokesperson, William Maphosa, says the municipality is in the process of rolling out 240-litre wheelie bins to citizens who have not had waste containers in the past. This project continrefuse bins, theft ues annually and is an initiative to improve the refuse removal services for all communities in the area.
For the past three years, the project has been rolled out according to a set schedule and budget allocation. ‘It has cost the municipality between R700 and R800 to provide a bin as a once-off to residents and businesses through the municipal rates account system,’ he said.
He appealed to members of the public to immediately report any suspicious person/s in possession of a green bin with a white PM engraved on the front and a serial number on the side to the municipality.
‘No municipal refuse bin should be used for any purpose other than refuse collection. Should it be found that the bins are being used to transport any objects other than household refuse, they will be repossessed and the person involved will be prosecuted,’ he said.
Maphosa warns that only one bin allocation per account holder will be done and the resident will, thereafter, be responsible for replacement in the case of theft, burning or damage to their bin. ‘We will also repair damages that are obviously not due to the residents’ negligence.
‘No community member will be allocated more than one bin so, in the case of any household with two or more bins, please report the matter for investigation,’ he said.
‘The municipality will only assist with new allocations until all the community members have received a wheelie bin. The allocation process will be rolled out on an annual basis, depending on budget allocation.
