Neo Makhene is the Gr. 9 learner who was seriously injured in a head-on collision in Ikageng on the night of Friday, 9 September.
According to his teacher, Lizahne Luchies, who has been supporting him since the incident, Neo sustained serious injuries after the accident. ‘He had fractured sinus bones and injuries to the crown of his head,’ she explained. ‘As the fractures are close to the brain, doctors will have to do a lot of research before the operation.’ The surgical procedure will involve a bone graft to fix the fractures.
Neo was admitted to 1 Military Hospital on Monday and, although this is a serious medical operation, Lizahne says he is positive and in high spirits. At the time of the accident, ER24’s Russel Meiring said four of the six people involved in the accident had sustained minor to moderate injuries. ‘Paramedics treated the patients at the scene and transported them to a nearby hospital for further treatment.’
The exact cause of the collision is not yet known but Const. Kelebogile Trom, SAPS spokesperson says a case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened.
