The student music festival at Senwes Cricket Stadium from 22-25 September has added yet another act to its already killer lineup.
Black Coffee, a multi-award winning record producer and DJ, based in Johannesburg, has been added to the list and will be performing on the main stage on Friday, 23 September.
His 2012 album, Africa Rising, went platinum and has earned him several awards. In 2005, he founded the company Soulistic Music and released his debut, self-titled album which won a SAMA award for Best Urban Dance Album. The maestro forged his musical background with his school choir and by studying the keyboard. He studied music in Durban because he felt that, as a producer, he had to expand his overall musical knowledge, develop his listening skills and advance his knowledge of music theory.
Black Coffee’s first album was created using very basic music-making software.
“I don’t know how to explain the production stages of my album because all I did was put down the basic ideas that I had. I didn’t use any MIDI controllers or anything along those sophisticated lines. All I did was program the beats.” Black Coffee recently won the Best International Act: Africa at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Shortly after making history by being the first SA artist to win a BET award, he announced that he’ll be working with Grammy-winning artist, Alicia Keys.
