Ikageng SAPS station lived up to their crime fighting reputation as the best police station in the land when they swiftly arrested a 15-year-old teenager accused of stabbing a 26-year-old man in Ext. 6 last Thursday.
The Ikageng detectives, Sgt Gaerupe and Const. Mnembe followed leads from the community and hunted down the minor and arrested him. He had been hiding at a friend’s place in Greenfield; he was taken to Bosasa Youth Development Centre (BYDC) in Klerksdorp.
According to Const. Kelebogile Trom, the Ikageng SAPS spokesperson, patrolling crime prevention members alerted the police to the suspected gang-related murder scene.
“They found an African man lying on the pavement next to the road. One of the people at the scene explained to the police that the victim had come running and asking him to call an ambulance for him. The 26-year-old victim died afterwards and was identified by one of his family members.
When the ambulance arrived at the scene, paramedics certified the victim dead and he was taken to the Potchefstroom mortuary. It is alleged he was stabbed in the chest with a knife,” she said.
Trom believes this was a revenge killing that is also gang-related.
“It is alleged that the 26-year-old victim stabbed the minor sometime last year. The minor is believed to be an SVK gang member and the deceased is believed to be a Money Lover gang member,” she explained.
Trom has called on the community and parents to fight gangsterism.
“I am appealing to parents to seek help from the authorities if they suspect that their children are involved in gangs and criminal activities,” she said.
