The foul smell that the Extension 11 community thought was a dead dog was in actual fact the decomposed body of an African man between the age of 42 and 55. The body was discovered by children on Tuesday afternoon.
According to a 9-year-old boy, he was playing with his two friends aged 7 and 10 in the bush at Ikageng Ext 11 ‘Eskom informal settlement’. The three boys were looking for old boxes to build toy cars when they saw the body lying in the bushes.
“We immediately ran away and went to alert our parents who called other neighbours and the police,” he said.
According to Ikageng SAPS spokesperson, Const. Kelebogile Trom, a group of people were standing around the body when the police arrived. The body was badly decomposed. The deceased was wearing a yellow rain coat, grey trousers and black and white sneakers that could be All Star sneakers. The deceased had a knife in his left hand and South African National Defence Force boots were lying next to him. He had no visible injuries.
Trom says an inquest case was opened and at this stage the police do not know the cause of death. “I am appealing to the community to assist in finding the family members of the deceased. The community must report anything suspicious to the police.”
Trom also urged the community to always respect crime scenes and keep a safe distance to let the police gather evidence and do proper investigations.
One of the community members who did not want to be named says she has warned everyone that something bad will happen in those bushes if they are not cleared or cut. “Drastic action should be taken to clear away the bushes and create a fun park for the children,” she said.
