Ikageng police arrested a 19-year-old man on Sunday for the alleged rape of his 11-year-old niece in Baipei, Promosa on Saturday night.
According to Ikageng SAPS spokesperson, Kelebogile Trom, the victim was staying over at her mother’s neighbour and was about to go to sleep at around 23:00 when they heard a knock at the door. The person identified himself as the child’s uncle and told the girl to go with him to get money from his shack. The neighbour agreed, warning him to bring the child back.
According to the victim, they walked to the uncle’s place and, on arrival, the suspect started searching for money and found R50 to give to her.
Thereafter, Trom says, the uncle started touching her inappropriately. After raping her, he took her back to her neighbour’s house.
The victim confided in the neighbour, who then took her to the police station to report the case.
Trom says the suspect is still in police custody.
“It is commendable that the victim managed to speak about the ordeal because such incidents are seldom reported, especially if family is involved.
The police would like to urge parents to monitor the behaviour of their children so they can pick up if something is wrong,” Trom advised.
