“I remember when a slice of cheesecake cost R2.50”

Jabu loves his regulars and knows them very well.

For 25 years Jabulani Mncube has been serving the community of Potchefstroom at Die Akker Koffiehuis.

He started working in the kitchen at Die Akker as a chef and stock controller in 1998 and has been part of the furniture ever since.

“I remember the days when a piece of cheesecake was only R2.50 and people respected other people’s property. Die Bult was a free place and the atmosphere was amazing. You could walk anywhere and not be scared.”

Jabu, as he is known by his regular customers, has been married to his wife for 14 years and has two children. He started working at Die Akker when it was still under the management of the previous owner.

“I got along very well with the previous owner and together we made the customers very happy. When the new owner, Betrus Els, took over, he kept everything the same at Die Akker. I enjoy working with him just as much. I love working at Die Akker because of the atmosphere and the people.”

These days Jabu works as a manager and also helps with the waitering.

“I enjoy the waitering part a lot. I love my regulars and know them very well. For me, it is about the people.”

Die Akker Koffiehuis has been part of the Potchefstroom community since 1993 and was the first place in Potchefstroom to serve cappuccinos
