Family up in arms over sewage leak

"Alternative housing has already been secured for them. Potchefstroom Dam has been identified as an alternative location while we attempt to complete sewer line repairs at Mokwele Street," Tshite said.

A sewage leak in Extension 11 that has been a problem for the last two months, has one resident at wits’ end.
According to Caroline Masike who lives in Mokwele street in Extension 11, the smell from the leak is killing her and her two children.
“We have been complaining about the blocked drain in my yard for two months now. Municipal workers say it is a broken pipe. Even our inside toilet is now blocked,” Masike said.
She says they have to clean the toilet before they can use it again. The family is also continuously cleaning the yard due to the sewage.
“We always clean, the municipality doesn’t even give us anything to help for the smell. This situation has now affected our health,” Masike added.
According to Masike, they constantly have to spend money on medication even though she is unemployed.
“We are coughing a lot and we have developed chest pains. We don’t have money to go to the doctor all the time. The municipality is failing us. We need help,” she said.

According to Jeanette Tshite, municipal spokesperson, The family was consulted through the ward councillor.

“Alternative housing has already been secured for them. Potchefstroom Dam has been identified as an alternative location while we attempt to complete sewer line repairs at Mokwele Street,” Tshite said.
