Climate Control unearth a musical gem with “In Flux”

With In Flux, Climate Control has developed their sound into rock that moves soul and body – flowing beautifully from top to bottom in a noteworthy track.

Despite new and challenging circumstances facing the music industry in 2020, Johannesburg rockers, Climate Control, has faced the music and on the same note released some cracking new music. Their third single this year “In Flux” is another gem of a track which was self-recorded during the lockdown period. This follows the tracks “Feeler” and “Master of None” which were released earlier this year to all major streaming platforms.

According to the band “In Flux” is an introspective look at one’s own flaws and destructive tendencies; how the urge to set metaphorical bridges alight can feel good and cathartic, albeit damaging and harmful in many ways.”

The song itself also flows nicely between softer clean vocals from Nic Gonzalez and harder distorted guitar riffs from lead guitarist Luca Zeeman in the opening chorus.

“I burn bridges alone, so why don’t you come right here why don’t you feel the heat. I burn bridges alone, so why don’t you come right here why don’t you disappear,” sings Gonzalez. This already hooks the listener from the onset showcasing the juxtaposition between distance (burning bridges) and the need for connection although it can have damaging effects on not only yourself but those around you too.

Musically the chorus hits hard and forms the solid foundation of the track which is flanked by different softer layers that build progressively in the verses. This elevates the emotional aspect of the song. Kudos to Gonzalez for the soulful bass licks in the verse.

Another really cool and standout element that really catches one’s attention is the double bass drumming from Ricky Dunningham. It doesn’t feel out of place in this track and harkens back to the post-hardcore days of the band and their Preludes album. The bridge is also one of the highlights of the song with a visceral and atmospheric feeling that slows things down. Some sweet work on the rims from Dunningham and a chilled guitar lick sets the mood for the final chorus to kick things into a high gear again.
