Matthew Mole is one of South Africa’s best solo musicians at the moment. Not only has he roamed the charts for more than two years with his brilliant debut album, The Home We Built, but he has now also released his second album “Run” to critical acclaim. This singer-songwriter is destined for great things in the future with his soulful and deep lyrics that focus on love and life as well as his folk and guitar-driven melodies. Here are my top 5 songs:
5. Run
The first single of Mole’s album with the same title catches your attention from the start. A great acoustic melody intertwines with his soothing voice as he sings “I’m gonna find it this way, I’m never gonna break my bones.” The song focuses on starting over and not running away from one’s problems or situations. Life is a discovery and about finding yourself. Love will always be around to encourage, uplift and empower. Mole’s vocals are one of the highlights of this new single.

4. The Wedding Song
If you ever needed a song for a wedding or to proclaim love unto your spouse then this is surely it.
This is a fantastic song from Mole that focuses on the purity of marriage and the amazing aspect of two people becoming one in marriage. The lyric “Heaven gave you love to complement my love, so one day we will love the way that God intended for us,” is absolutely fantastic. You don’t get these deeply meaningful songs nowadays and it is something fresh from this young songwriter. The melodies are also fantastic and once again complement the lyrics superbly.

3. You and Your Crown
This is such a catchy tune and one of my favourite Matthew Mole’s song, mainly because of the positive lyrics and the use of the xylophone in the verses. This xylophone melody is expertly complemented by the banjo riff. A great song that also showcases Mole’s vocal depth and lyric writing ability: “You fall down in the light, in the blinding light, you and your crown win the fight win the fight.” Mole’s faith also shines in this song and is especially inspirational.

2. Take Yours and I’ll Take Mine
This is probably Matthew Mole’s most played and famous song and it is hard to disagree that it is one of the fan favourites. The banjo intro is really catchy and creates a fantastic melody throughout the song. “I’ll find mine on the right of your side. If I throw away my fear and pride to set things right then I’ll find mine on the right of your side,” sings Mole in the chorus,  a self-reflection on his own behaviour and modelling it to live fully for his saviour.

1. Autumn

“Go see the world, speak of your understanding. Make one thing known. We are held in merciful hands and You are the way home.” This is how this amazing song from Mole starts out in the single from The Home We Built, which focuses on God’s mercy and grace and the need to stand up after falling down and living life to the fullest with love in our hearts.” The outro with the guitar rhythm is also brilliantly crafted. A true sonic experience that sums up Mole at his best.
