In years to come, the English rock band, Muse, will be regarded as one of the greats of the 21st century. The band, which has seven studio albums to its name, has produced massive hits and has consistently been one of the best live bands in the world. The trio of Matthew Bellamy, Chris Wolstenholme and Dominic Howard are one-of-a-kind musicians – each brilliant in their own, unique way. The world should be grateful that they joined forces and could possibly say, “Thank you for the (Muse)ic.

  1. Hysteria

When Muse fans think about Hysteria, they would instantly direct you to the brilliance of Chris Wolstenholme’s bass playing in the intro and throughout the song. The effects used on the bass give the song a darker, spacey feel that compliments its main themes and song title. The main riff is also one of the classic modern riffs. The solo in the song is also really unique and Bellamy must be complimented for his guitar skills.

  1. Supermassive Black Hole

The opening riff of this song catches my attention from the start as it is different, complex and completely unique. This is also one of the songs that pushed Muse into the mainstream, as it was used in various advertisements and video games, to name but a few. Bellamy’s vocals are extremely high-pitched, but it works as only he can pull it off. It almost has a Queen-meets-new-millennium feel. Muse pull this off and the results are a pleasure on the eardrums.

  1. Starlight

Starlight is one of Muse’s best piano-influenced songs and its critical acclaim, from those in music and their fans, makes this song a definite hit in their catalogue. This love song from their 2006 album, Black Holes and Revelations, is usually one of the closing songs in their live set. The lyrics, “I’ll never let you go if you promise not to fade away, Hold you in my arms, I just wanted to hold, You in my arms,” are lyrics that every Muse fan should know by heart.

  1. Plug In Baby

This song is one of the band’s earlier hits and resonates melodic excellence. Bellamy’s intro lead guitar also has a Mozart-like quality to it. Classic music definitely meets rock with this hit. The rough and deep bass guitar notes only elevate the grandeur of this song that has been heard in festivals around the world. A true crowd favourite and a must in any top-5 list.

  1. Uprising

This is one of my personal favourites because of its great build-up and instrumentation, as well as an awesome music video to accompany the track.

The song has an eerie intro but the lyrics paint a picture of resistance with “They will not force us, they will stop degrading us.” The song has various levels and keeps the listener on their feet – one of the great qualities of Muse’s music.
