DVD of the week: Victor Frankenstein

7/10 for Victor Frankenstein...

This thrilling remake of the classic story Frankenstein gives a new and fresh angle to the story of the mad scientist, Victor Frankenstein, who created life out of nothing.
Instead of telling the story of how Frankenstein created a monster and spent the remainder of his life trying to track it down and destroy it, this film is about the real monster in the story – Frankenstein himself.
Victor Frankenstein (James McAvoy) visits a circus in London and, after saving an injured aerialist Lorelei (Jessica Brown Findlay), he spots a deformed hunchback with the brain of a genius. After seeing the potential in this circus clown, he decides to rescue him and make him his apprentice – naming him Igor (Daniel Ratcliffe).
Frankenstein invites Igor into his dark and magical life of science and trusts him with his most secretive of experiments: to create life. While Frankenstein and Igor spend their time pumping life into dead organs, religious police inspector, Roderick Turpin (Andrew Scott) focuses all of his resources on catching Frankenstein. He knows Frankenstein is meddling with unholy experiments and would devote his life to stopping him.
Meanwhile, Frankenstein and Igor ally up with Frankenstein’s rich classmate, Finnegan (Freddie Fox), who promises them all the resources they need in order to create a humanoid creature. As their first experiment goes down an unexpected road, they decided to take Finnegan’s help and create not only life but a man.
Victor Frankenstein also delves deeper into the life of Igor, who ultimately tells the story out of his perspective and turns out to not only be a deformed apprentice but so much more.
*Victor Frankenstein is rated 16 and has scenes of violence.*
I would rate this film 7/10 because it really takes the classic we all know a step further and gives a different side of each troubled character.

Victor Frankenstein is available for rent at DVD4home on the corner of Retief and Govan Mbeki streets.
