DVD of the week: Star Wars: The Force Awakens

7½/10 for Star Wars: The Force Awakens

The seventh episode of the award-winning sci-fi series, Star Wars, is one of the most anticipated films of the year and is definitely worth the wait.
The first Star Wars episode was released in 1977 and now, 38 years later, the seventh, and hopefully not the last, Star Wars film has hit DVD stores nationwide. In this episode, we go back thirty years after the destruction of the Death Star. Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) has disappeared and a new evil has emerged from the fallen Galactic Empire, led by Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and known as the First Order.
A defector and soldier of the First Order, named Finn (John Boyega), decides to break away from the group and escape to a desert planet named Jakku. Here, he meets Rey (Daisy Ridley), who has recently found a BB-8 droid, not knowing that it holds a secret – a map to the location of Luke Skywalker.
By intercepting the mind of the droid’s owner, resistance pilot, Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), Kylo Ren discovers the value of the BB-8. He focuses all his resources on the capturing of this valuable droid. Finn and Rey escape the planet with BB-8 by stealing an old ship that they later discover is the Millennium Falcon. On their journey, they accidentally end up almost being hijacked by the true owner of the falcon, Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and his co-pilot, Chewbacca, the Wookiee warrior. Hearing the news that BB-8 is carrying a map to Skywalker, Han Solo decides to team up with Finn and Rey in order to escape Kylo Ren and, ultimately, reach Luke’s twin sister, General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), leader of the resistance, to help track down the last of the Jedi Knights, Luke Skywalker.
*Star Wars: The Force Awakens is rated PG13 and contains scenes of violence.*
I would rate this film 7½/10. This movie was worth the wait and has met the high expectations of its long-time audience although, in the end, you might not be as fulfilled as you would have hoped.
