Dassierand residents set an example with Clean-up Campaign

Today (20 March) community members of  Dassierand took care of their own neighbourhood by embarking on a Clean-up Campaign at all the areas around Dassierand.  They especially targeted bushy areas, which criminals can use as hiding places and intersections where the vision of motorists is hindered.

“Most importantly, we do all this as part of good citizenship and we also like to contribute in making sure that Dassierand is a beautiful and safe place.  We don’t want to withhold payments of rates and taxes. The campaign is an effort from our side to show and remind the JB Marks municipality what they need to do, what we are paying for, and what is expected of them.  We do not want the condition of this beautiful city to deteriorate more than what we currently see. They should realise that crime prevention through environmental design is also realised”, Sam Tselanyane, a spokesperson from Dassierand community says.

Meanwhile, a ward councillor of Dassierand urged the Parks Department to help with the massive clean-up. They have supported the resident’s efforts and showed up with large tractors and trucks helping with the clean-up.

Tselanyane says the community is very much aware of challenges that are experienced in the neighbourhood like crime (house-breakings), low water pressure, sewerage spillage in the streets, lack of maintenance of our streets (potholes), street lights that are also neglected as well as the reluctance of refuse removal.

“Those are some of the main challenges that we are faced with on a daily basis and it is important for us to stand up as Dassierand residents to make a statement.  Our very first statement is to say, we will clean our neighbourhood and show the municipality how it needs to look like. It will then be up to them to maintain all areas around Potchefstroom to be habitable and always keeping them clean”, says Tselanyane.
